A Search For God
By: Edgar Cayce ~ Books: 1 & 11
What is unique to the Spiritual Growth Study Groups is that there is no leader, teacher or guru figure. In studying the material from the 'Search For God' books by Edgar Cayce, and focusing on spirituality-based information, we find lively discussions take place. In addition, groups might gather to study Dreams, Bible Study, and Universal Law. Members share their insights which contributes to the group and helps everyone. There are guidelines and help.
How The Study Groups Work
Small groups ranging from 4 - 10 people get together virtually through zoom for approx. 1.5 - 2 hours.
The frequency of these meetings can vary – weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on each group.
Given an outline, each member rotates on leading the discussion - sharing insights, and learned concepts. The material contained in the readings is important in themselves, but it is the application of the Cayce principles that have the capacity to change our lives.
Along with personal growth, the relationships one develops among members in a group becomes life-lasting.

'The Four Foundational Steps to Soul Growth'
An A.R.E. conference presentation with Mark Thurston, PhD.
During Study Group meetings, it is not necessary to “teach” anyone anything....but sharing within a loving, nurturing atmosphere benefits all members of the group. It is not necessary to agree with others, nor even understand each other, but when all honour the fact that each must come into awareness in his or her own terms, at whatever individual pace, everyone gains.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH GROUP PROCEDURE(S)
Prayer is talking to God. Meditation is listening to God.
A MEDITATION PROCEDURE…………………………………..…………………page 1
This paper outlines the steps you can follow in order to meditate (practice listening to God)

-
Set a regular time of day for your meditation session. The regularity makes it, the more likely you will remember to meditate. Plus, you may find it easier to get your mind focused and quieted more quickly if you do meditate at the same time each day. Choose the time when you are most likely to be alert, least distracted, and most able to remain focused on your spiritual aspirations and ideals.
At first you may want to have relatively brief meditation sessions. Do whatever is comfortable to you. Later, you can expand this period to the length of time that is most desirable.

-
Choose from among the many aids for attunement, which may help create the right mood for you, and which assist you in getting yourself focused on your spiritual aspirations. There is no set regime for this step. Choose whatever will be helpful to you to relax and quiet the mind from distractions of the day. The Readings suggest doing whatever would prepare your mind for receiving a most honored guest. Have a moment of silence to purify the mind and heart before approaching the God within. Many have found the following to be helpful.
-
Reading from the Bible or some other spiritual literature
-
Conscious, focused breathing. The readings recommended that three times, one breathe in through the right nostril while holding the left; exhale through the mouth….then three times inhale through the left nostril while holding the right nostril, exhale through the right.
-
Gentle head and neck exercise to relax any tension. Gently drop the head forward three times, then backward three times, to the left three times, to the right three times and in a circular motion first to the left three times and then to the right three times.
-
Chanting
-
Incense
-
Listen to soft, inspirational, quieting or centering music
-
Soft Lighting
-
A MEDITATION PROCEDURE…………………………………..…………………page II
-
Raise the awareness of being protected by praying: “As I open myself to the unseen forces that surround the Throne of grace, beauty, and might, I throw about myself that protection that is found in the thought of the Christ.
-
Pray. Take a few moments to attune your mind through prayer. The Lord’s Prayer is often used to attune the mind and the body to the Providence of God. Also, there are many forms of prayer that can be used: petition, praise, thanksgiving, forgiveness, etc. Choose each day what seems most appropriate.

-
Repeat several times the affirmation you have chosen for meditation. An affirmation is a positive statement offered to the Divine within that you would like manifested in your consciousness. For example, in each lesson of the Search For God Books, the Readings offered a specific affirmation keyed to the concepts of that spiritual growth step. After the affirmation is read and studied, it is then offered to the Divine within for bringing it into fruition in the life of the meditator. Real meditation begins when one is in a state of listening. You will begin to feel the meaning of the words rather than just saying them mechanically.
If you discover that your attention has wandered or you have been distracted, don’t despair. Gently bring your attention back by silently repeating the affirmation and return to silence – a state of listening.
Do not get discouraged. Despite the frequency with which distractions may arise (internally or externally), effects are still taking place within.

-
At the end of this period of silence, pray for others. In other words, what you have received, give.
If there are people who have specifically asked for your prayers in healing or for help in changing a condition, then add your prayer to theirs. For those people who have not specifically asked, but for whom you have a concern, bless them and imagine them surrounded with light. This process allows the recipients to maintain their free will. It is always a good thing to add, “God’s will be done.”
